The AngioScan is an important tool in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. By measuring the elasticity of blood vessels large and small it is possible to see early changes before the onset of clinical symptoms. Research has shown from the CAFÉ study that you can have a normal blood pressure but the central aortic systolic blood pressure (CASP)could be dangerously high. This study showed that beta blockers lowered the traditional blood pressure in the brachial artery but the central aortic systolic blood pressure remained high and this is the blood pressure at the heart itself. The central aortic blood pressure will eventually be the new standard replacing conventional blood pressure. It usually takes a long time before traditional procedures in medicine make changes even in the face of very good research that can save lives.The type of evaluation from the AngioScan goes way beyond using blood pressure as the best prevention for cardiovascular disease and is the future of preventative cardiovascular evaluation. It is easy to use and takes 5 minutes. The AngioScan uses a finger probe similar to a pulse oximeter and shines visible red and infrared light into the fingertip that can indicate the volume of blood in or passing through the artery. With this technology we are measuring a pressure wave that the heart produces when the left ventricle contracts during systole. This pressure wave travels from the heart to the periphery and reflects back. If the reflective wave travels back too fast then your arteries are more like a stiff pipe than a flexible balloon. This means that the vessels have little compliance and are unable to buffer the increased pressure in the vessels. If the reflective wave is coming back during early systole when the heart is making its next contraction, the heart is going to have to work extra hard against this resistance. The pulse wave velocity is much faster in a stiff artery usually from atherosclerosis. In a large scale study involving 3,075 older people, those who had the highest pulse wave velocity were three times more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than those who had the lowest pulse wave velocity. The AngioScan visually and numerically will show you the vascular age of your patients’ arteries, vascular stiffness, pulse curve type, stress index and oxygen saturation.
